Essential Skills For Digital Marketers

Posted by Brenda Ronan on Jan 28, 2020 12:15:00 PM

Today we're doing almost everything online from communicating with family and friends to shopping, research, and consuming media. The digital world is going to offer students who master it tremendous opportunities throughout their lifetime. Understanding how the web works, and how to add value through that understanding is an exciting career path.

digital marketing as a career path

Digital marketing has transformed the way companies and individuals advertise, sell to consumers, and build brands with worldwide appeal. As technology continues to evolve, we've entered a new era where developing an understanding and building complex, cross-platform marketing strategies utilizing digital elements to reach customers is an in-demand skill-set. Digital marketing encompasses a wide variety of skill sets and below are some of the most common skills that digital marketers should know:

Social Media – Using sites like Instagram and Facebook allows you to target your message to reach consumers who may be interested in the product or service you represent. Social media is the fastest way to effectively reach consumers and drive traffic to web and landing pages.

CRMs – Customer Relationship Management software (CRMs) provide a way to track engagement and build relationships that help guide potential customers through their buying process, by delivering the information they need, when they need it.

AdWords/Paid Advertising - Placing paid advertising on Google, and other sites can be an effective traffic driver. The conversion rate on the first visit for most websites is around 2%. If a visitor leaves your website, retargeting your ad keeps your brand in front of them after they leave.

SEO – You can have a beautiful website, but if you can't get “found” online, it doesn't matter. Search Engine Optimization helps you get found by including words and phrases in your content that a customer would use to search for a business.

Content Creation – Writing effective content is a skill that is important for every business. Content includes web pages, landing pages, email, PPC ads, social media, blog posts and more. Understanding how to write effectively optimized content is a valuable in-demand skill.

Automation –  In digital marketing, automation allows you to track visitor engagement on your website and by writing “if-then” protocols allows the delivery of targeted messages based on their actions. Automation is being used in all areas of business including email marketing, data entry, accounting and customer service.

Life Skills Digital Marketing Can Teach You

If you're interested in how brands are built, how to build complex strategies to deliver a message, love math, psychology and statistics, and creative pursuits like design and copy-writing, consider a career in digital marketing. Even if you aren't sure that it is the perfect career for you, the skills you will learn while learning digital marketing can help you in many other career paths and industries such as business, non-profits, event planning, real-estate, and many more. Developing digital marketing skills can add value that you can carry into a variety of career paths. These skills include:

Strategic Thinking

Developing a digital marketing strategy requires a systematic approach based on understanding psychology and how potential consumers of a product or service gather and use information online. You will need to examine which channels are used for research, and then develop a message to place on those channels that will appeal to your target audience. The process of strategic thinking can be broken down into three phases which will apply to many areas of your life:

  1. Where are you now?
  2. Where do you want to be?
  3. How will we get there?

When designing a strategic marketing plan you will learn to set priorities, focus energy and resources, and work towards tangible, measurable goals.

Understanding your target market's pain points and tailoring a message to provide solutions requires creativity. Using language and images you need to craft a message that reaches people on an emotional level. Generating and executing unique ideas that communicate a message in an original way requires “outside the box” thinking. Digital marketing skills help develop the creativity to meet the challenges life can bring.

A big part of digital marketing consists of creating unique messages and then refining them through systematic testing. Some ideas you develop might seem perfect, however, they don't produce. You need to develop focus and be persistent in your approach. By learning what doesn't work, you can refine your approach and tailor a message that reaches your market effectively, getting them to act.

Digital marketing is all about communicating a message in an effective way. By gaining an understanding of language, trigger words, and crafting copy that reaches consumers on an emotional level, you'll be developing the skills needed to thrive in today's business world.
