On October 27th 2011, Philadelphia will celebrate its 329th birthday. Philadelphia, located in the Northeastern United States, now ranks as the fifth most populous city in the United States.
Founded by William Penn it is often nicknamed "Philly" and "The City of Brotherly Love" by many locals. Philadelphia has seen great growth over the years. In 2007, Philadelphia become one of only four American cities with two or more buildings surpassing over 900 feet when the Comcast Center became the largest building in the city passing One Liberty Place.
Philadelphia is one of twelve cities to have sports teams in all four major sports. With the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League, the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball, the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association and the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League. In 2010, they added a Major League Soccer franchise, the Philadelphia Union.
Philadelphia is even taking advantage of their big sports crowd. After tearing down the legendary CoreStates Spectrum, there are plans to develop a district of retail, dining and entertainment in the vicinity of Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center called Philly Live! On the tourism side, most recently, Philadelphia has been ranked as one of the most visited cities in the United States. As for education, Philadelphia has over 80 colleges, universities, trade schools.
Ranking as the seventh highest GDP among American metros, Philadelphia has been competitive in the economic state for quite sometime. There are several Fortune 500 companies in Philadelphia. Philly is the home to the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and cable television and internet provider Comcast.
